The masterclass will be held at Restaurant Syv Ni 13 / Winelab Academy in Aarhus on Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with Niels Verburg sharing the story behind Luddite Wines and guiding us through a tasting of some of their most sought-after bottles.
Background and Context
Niels Verburg is the visionary behind Luddite Wines in Botrivier, South Africa — a winery celebrated for its uncompromising approach to winemaking. Here, passion takes precedence over technology, and the wines are crafted without irrigation, pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers, allowing the terroir and vintage to shine through. In this brief video, Niels shares what motivates his work and what truly matters to him as a winemaker.
After honing his skills as a winemaker in France, Chile, New Zealand, and Australia, Niels and his wife Penny purchased the farm in Botrivier in the late 1990s. They launched Luddite soon after, releasing their first wine, Luddite Shiraz, in 2000. Today, Niels is a proud member of the Cape Winemakers Guild, an exclusive circle of South Africa’s most acclaimed winemakers.
The masterclass will offer a deep dive into Luddite’s history, philosophy, and craft, paired with a tasting of selected wines from the estate’s acclaimed portfolio.
